Music and Lyrics by Cole Porter,
Book by Bella and Samuel Spewack,
directed by Sean -Edward Hall
June 6 - 8, 12 - 15, 2008
"Kiss Me Kate" was originally produced
in 1948 and has been considered one of Broadway's
treasures. It was revived in 1999, taking advantage
of new technology in music and keeping in mind evolving
social values. In the Revised Version all the basic
music material for the show was taken back to the
fundamentals of its melody, harmony and rhythm, and
a new score was written. All seventeen of the original
songs are present in the revised score. Another Op'nin'
Another Show welcomes you to Baltimore and to the
opening of a musical version of Shakespeare's "The
Taming of the Shrew." The cast of the play is
on stage and receiving final instructions from Fred
Graham, the director. A play-within-a-play unfolds,
where each of the four main cast members' on-stage
performance is complicated by what is happening in
his off-stage life. Fred takes the roles of director
and male lead, Petruchio. His ex-wife Lilli, now a
movie star with a reputation for being difficult to
work with, plays Katharine, the shrew. Comedy, laughs
and songs erupt in to a show of shows.
Directed by Sean-Edward D. Hall. Sean-Edward D. Hall
is making his second appearance at TIP as director.
In 1999, he brought it the cast of his original adaptation
of PINOCCHIO from Springfield Theatre Centre White
Rabbit series. Sean lists that production as well
as his recent stint directing the show again for Jacksonville
Theatre Guild June 2006 with these others: THE SPITFIRE
GRILL, AMADEUS, ROMEO AND JULIET for ACCTT, THE MUSIC
MAN, MAME, A FUNNY THING..., THE LITTLE FOXES, and
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (just to name a few). Sean
is also active on-stage in both musicals and straight
theatre, he list these as some of his favs: "Samuel"
in the World Premiere production of DAVID; YOU AND
I by Ken Bradbury and Roger Wainright, "Utterson"
in JEKYLL AND HYDE, "Salieri" in AMADEUS,
"Rev. Hale" and also "Danforth"(in
a seperate production) in THE CRUCIBLE, "Sancho"
in MAN OF LA MANCHA, Captain Hook in PETER PAN, "Dr.
Craven" in SECRET GARDEN (well anything that
Leigh Steiner directs), and "King Pellinore"
in CAMELOT. Sean is ecstatic to FINALLY get a chance
to direct KISS ME KATE and work at TIP again!
