Twelfth Night (or What You Will) takes place in magical Illyria during the Feast of Epiphany—a time of holiday revelry and traditional expectations of misrule.
Viola, shipwrecked there, and believing her celestial twin Sebastian drowned in the tempest, poses as a boy to protect herself and make her way in Illyria more freely. He/she is employed as go-between by Duke Orsino to woo the Lady Olivia, whom Orsino imagines he loves (although he knows little of Olivia’s person). Thinking him/her a boy, Olivia falls in love with Viola. Viola herself falls in love with Orsino, and Orsino, to his own bewilderment, develops feelings for Viola, whom he believes male. Well…
Now, Lady Olivia’s household is busy with relatives and domestics. Her uncle Sir Toby Belch is a farcical drunkard, perhaps malicious, certainly a grifter. His mark is Sir Andrew Aguecheek. Toby promises Aguecheek access to Olivia for a price.…
