This colorful and dramatic saga is based on the film which starred James Stewart as a strong willed Virginia farmer trying to keep his family neutral as the Civil War rages. Union forces and the Confederates see things only in shades of Blue or Grey, so the family is inevitably swept up in the conflict against all odds. Their story is a heart-warming and heart-rending portrayal of the upheaval that left wounds on the land and its people for generations to come. The Tony-winning Broadway production ran for over 1000 performances and toured extensively.

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR

Charley Cross (Director) Charley was active for many years in Southern Illinois theater in all the possible roles – acting, and all aspects of production.  This is his second directing experience at Theatre in the Park, having directed “Yearning to Breathe Free” last summer.  Charley also directed the Mature Mob in Octocber of 2010 and thoroughly enjoyed that experience as well.  Locally he has been in “Sound of Music” at Muni, “Children of Eden” at STC, and at TIP “Kiss Me, Kate,” “Two by Two,” and “Forever This Land.”  Charley also was in charge of props and sets at TIP for “Forever This Land” and “Abe, the Musical.”  His favorite past roles have been Peter in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Smee in “Peter Pan” in Neverland, Frank in “Lend Me a Tenor,” and Shem in “Two by Two.”  Charley lives in Springfield and is a multi-talented maintenance worker.  He enjoys carpentry, church, people, and, of course, theater.  He is especially proud of being a father and a grandfather.
